Rapt in Maille
Handmade stainless steel jewelry by Melissa Banks
My jewelry combines traditional patterns of chainmaille with contemporary decorative elements and a modern, urban design sensibility. When designing, I like playing with the idea of masculine vs. feminine. Each piece is woven, measured, cut, and assembled by my hand. I work exclusively in stainless steel, a strong and durable metal that won’t tarnish or react adversely with skin. I have a BFA in Crafts/Metals from the University of Illinois and have been in business since 2000, creating a loyal following in Chicago and beyond. My inspirations come from a variety of sources, including punk & glam rock, Art Deco, tribal art, and the Victorian era.
