Art and accessories made with pencils
As an avid collector of folk and outsider art, Sue Lowenberg (the Pencil Lady) has traveled extensively to the Southern U.S. to visit self-taught artists in their own environments, and took special interest in how these artists used recycled materials in their work. To complement her growing collection of folk and outsider art, Sue started covering the family furniture with recycled pencils. Using vintage advertising and art pencils, as well as the regular No. 2, this effort has evolved into her current pencil portraits that have been influenced by her background in graphic design, quilt-making and other crafts. Sue’s work has been featured on ABC’s 190 North, on-line at NBCchicago, Daily Candy, and ChiTown Fashionista, as well as in Chicago Home and Garden Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the international design magazines Preziosa (Naples, Italy) and Nisha (Israel).
