Keshi Pearls, Gems & Hammered Sterling Jewelry
My background… BFA in painting and sculpture, 3rd grade teacher for many years in Evanston while continuing in sculpture and painting, exhibiting in Chicagoland art fairs. The focus on jewelry began in 2004 after retiring from teaching, finding it a bountiful mix of color, texture and sculptural effects. My work has evolved into two main styles. One involves hammered sterling wire with simple lyrical lines; the other involves keshi (petal) pearls, working with color combinations and the lovely interplay of organic shapes (keshi pearls) juxtaposed with geometric shapes (faceted gems).
My nicest compliment came from a newly divorced young mother who thought she would never again be interested in jewelry, but after seeing the keshi pearl clusters felt a new understanding of what jewelry can be. A year later, her new boyfriend contacted me to buy the piece she had described.
Now living in Vermont, in addition to spending time with a terrific 5-year-old granddaughter, I have joined with many people here who work toward renewable sources of energy, and value the jewelry-making for the centered calm it brings, for the healing input of color and creativity.
“Love is in the Earth”, on my tags, quotes the title of a 1991 book about the energetic qualities of gemstones… my way of gratefully remembering the Earth as the source of such beauty.
